Powermonkey Extreme Field Test – The Plan

382894373

As a Social Hiking addict, the biggest problem for me is battery life. Modern smart phones are getting cleverer and cleverer, but it seems that battery technology is not developing at the same pace. On a long day walk it is a struggle to keep my phone going without a power top up.

I am hoping the answer

Brecon Beacons Day 2 – Fan Frynych, Fan Dringarth and Fan Fawr

Dog surveying Brecon Beacons

Thanks largely to one too many of the aptly named ‘Hikers Ruin’ I had consumed the night before and the fantastic breakfast my hosts had produced, day 2 was quite a late start! I wanted to head out onto the part of the Brecon Beacons just west of A470 but the lingering headache was making it hard to concentrate on the map, so in the end I download a free route on ViewRanger published by Trail Magazine.…

Review: Men’s 100 Khyber 1/4 Zip Fleece Top

Testing in the rain

I have had this Men’s 100 Khyber 1/4 Zip fleece top for almost three months now. I have worn it on hills and in fields, on hot days and showery days, whilst on campsites and in pubs – I have even worn…

Brecon Beacons Day 1 – Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Fan y Big

Pen Y Fan from Cribyn

Whenever I am heading towards Wales there is always a point in the journey when everything seems better – after days on end of sitting in front of my computer working, my shoulders loosen, my mind clears and my mood lightens. It is the point in the journey when, after cresting yet another nondescript English hill, you suddenly see the hills and mountains of Wales laid out before you.

In this case I was driving down the A438 heading towards Brecon, on the edge of Brecon Beacons. It was the weekend of the annual Brecon Jazz festival which, in my younger days, I used to attend fairly regularly. This year I was combining spending some quality time with some old friends (and drinking the best homebrew brewed by my friend’s dad), with some much need quality time on the hills.…

Taking the plunge…

P1000238

Today I tried something new… in a tucked away part of Brecon Beacons, I stripped off and slipped into a river's refreshing embrace.

For today's route I choose a free download on ViewRanger from Trail Magazine. The route happened to be to some plunge pools, but it was the right length and in the right part of the

I would rather be camping than working!

Yesterday I was presented with a lovely gift – a mug with "I would rather be camping than working – a bad day camping is better than a good day working".

This is particularly apt since, for the last month, I have spent the vast majority of my waking hours (including some where I should have been sleeping) stuck in my office working. Perhaps I should not be complaining

My favourite outdoor blog posts in May (from 9th May)

My grand plan of blogging about my favourite blog posts on a weekly basis is gradually drifting into a monthly summary – still, here is a fairly sizeable list of my favourite outdoor related blog posts from May (well from 9th May)

Praising online outdoor retailers

Over the last few days, I have ordered some outdoor goodies from a selection of online retailers. It would be unfair to ‘review’ the website and ordering process for each one, as they range from small businesses, to larger dedicated online stores, all the way up to large retail chains – each with a different budget and need for their website (and I managed to find, order and pay for the goods I wanted on all the sites!). The one thing they all have in common though is fantastic speed of service, especially from Webtogs, Alpkit and Chcolate Fish who do not charge extra for postage.…

Kit spending spree (updated again)

With a trip to Snowdonia planned for next weekend (I say planned in the loosest possible sense – I have not actually planned any routes or where we are camping yet!), I have gone on a bit of an outdoor kit spending spree, inspired almost entirely by @PhilOutdoors kit list and videos from his TGO Challenge.
